lost...

What do you do when you are lost?

I’ve been lost with friends while driving in Melbourne and on our way to a party in Bendigo. Both times were very different to what I’ve experienced before with others.

In Melbourne my friend and I were distracted and talking and singing and missed some turn offs to get home. We ended up spending much more time in the car driving through Melbourne than we intended to. We were driving along talking in deep conversation and planning to take over the world. As we were deep in such plans we drove past turn off after turn off to get home. Each time we realized just after we went past the turn. This is not the time to recognise that such turn has gone. Se we just kept going. Neither of us too fazed about missing such a turn. We then just had more time to plan our take over….

Then the other night a different friend of mine and I were off to a party. We were already a fare bit late (just a couple of hours) and not exactly sure where we were headed. We just kept going. We stopped and looked at a map (where we were off to was not on this map so that wasn’t much help). Then kept going, not phased.

If we curse, rant and rave when such things happen we achieve nothing. If you are lost how do you react? Do you calming look at a map or keep going knowing that the way you need to go, a turn off or something similar will appear?

In these examples we kept planning, we kept going and were not shut down, and it didn’t stop us from loosing sight of the goal. but often that is exactly what happens...

  • Good blog.

There is a difference to being lost, and not knowing where you're going.

Being lost suggests (to me, at least), that you know where you're going - you just don't know how to get there, yet.

Whereas not knowing where you are going suggests that some mindless / aimless movement is occuring. That you don't know where you're heading - but nonetheless you're still moving with nowhere to go.

When you're lost, I think its probably best to stop, reassess you're position, regain you're bearings and try heading toward the goal again.

If we keep going when we're lost we run the risk of ending up further from where we want to be and closer to where we don't.

  • About a month ago I got lost late at night with some of my friends in the bush just our of Bendigo. I made a torch by tying my sock to a stcik and soaking it in kerosene, but it didn't last very long because it melted.

  • Hi I'm one of Trav's friends.
    yeah well said Cara
I think the trouble is when the road ends and you have to choose which way to go and often it's these times when your off the map and just have to choose and make the most of the road hoping that this will still get you to where you are going. This is when you are really lost. But the thing is that there will always be signs, so if you figure out it isn't the way you were ment to go, you can turn around or go a different way.

but yes we should never loose sight of the goal.
