HARRY POTTER

ok so the new Harry Potter book is coming out in July. i must admit that i have read all the other books, and have seen the movies. although now I'm of a different frame of mind about the whole thing. now I'm not sure what to think, but i don't think that i will read the last one...

many friends and people i respect all hold different opinions on the topic of Harry Potter. some love him, some hate him, and others just don't care.

one pastor i know took his church on a field trip to see some of the movies.

other pastors i know say that if you expose yourself to them, your position in leadership in their church will be at risk.

what we dwell on will be reflected in us, in how we act and respond to situations, it will come out to those who we have influence over. how will reading and watching Harry Potter influence you/me and those around us?

the bible tells us to read and take in those things that are good, and godly. is Harry Potter?

  • You know I've kind of being thinking about this lately. Possibly because of some of the HP merch of my housemates around my house.

I would fit somewhere between the don't care and 'hate' him. Why? Because it's witchcraft, something I don't care is on whatever level, should it really be encouraged? Also I don't care or have enough time to get into it.

At uni we're actually encouraged to read books like HP, because its what kids are into, and we should 'think like kids' I guess.

I believe that if you immerse yourself in something you can quite easily become that. For example, the more I hang around 'non-christians' the more I see myself acting a bit like they do. However if I immerse myself in God (by praying, spending time with Him, reading His word etc.) I find myself to be more 'Godly'.

the bible tells us to read and take in those things that are good, and godly. is Harry Potter?

Not having read Harry Potter I haven't got a clue. My sister is right into him (funnily enough she walked away from her faith about the same time she got fired up for HP, whether there's a correlation or not I don't know) the movies were constantly on at our house, so I'd seen pretty much all the movies on and off, and my friend literally dragged me to the third movie. My taste in movies definately isn't HP.

Yeah, but I choose to immerse myself in the truth! And, well, I don't neccisarily think HP is that.

I'd really like to hear other peoples opinions on this! It's amazing the amount of christians who read HP.

I think it depends how you read/watch Harry Potter. If you take the view that it's 'just entertainment' and shouldn't be taken seriously (i.e. you should switch off your brain while consuming), I think that's not healthy. (I think that's not healthy with any media.) I think it can be quite healthy to examine these cultural artifacts while asking questions about why people are interested in them, and about how they glorify God. (Because nothing can help but glorify God in some way.)

the bible tells us to read and take in those things that are good, and godly. is Harry Potter?
I think there are good and godly things in Harry Potter, but I certainly wouldn't say that everything in it is good and godly. I wouldn't even say that everything in the Bible is good and godly - it has murder, rape and people saying they want to smash children's heads in.

Also, I think it's important to realise that witchcraft isn't the same as Satanism.

  • I think you said it best yourself:

what we dwell on will be reflected in us

You can watch/read HP without actually dwelling on it.

I guess what I am saying is that it will affect you as much as you let it affect you.

Other than that, I agree with what the both the others have mentioned previously. Good stuff!

  • I really don't know what to think about Harry Potter and other contentious issues like it. I didn't even believe in witches until I became a Christian... now is that good or bad?

  • there are other questions like can we use Harry Potter to talk about God. and i think we can. i don't think that we should shelter ourselves from these things so that we are like living under a rock. by watching or reading harry potter it can help us to talk to our non-christian frinds i guess. but then we shouldn't conform to the pattern of this world either.

hmm still torn on this issue....

christop - but witchcraft isn't good. that's like just as bad as satanism isn't it? i'm confused...

  • I was always under the impression that there are no 'grey ares' with God, you're either in the light or the darkness :/

I don't neccisarily think that by reading HP we're going to relate to our non-christian mates, there are pleanty of other ways.

Steff - I don't think it's either... I think its good to be aware things like that are going on in the world, but not getting to much into it, if you know what I mean?

  • Jesus hung out with people who were sinners, but he didn't sin to get in their 'good books'

  • I also think that satan uses harry potter to make evil look innocent. He targets a vulnerable group: children.

  • Christop - you say the bible has 'ungodly' things in it, but are you looking at the bible as a story book or something we can learn from?

  • Wow... can't believe I didn't see this post before!

Even if witchcraft is not exactly the same as Satanism, they're still both real and condemned in the Bible. They both are involved with demonic power. People who practise witchcraft will not inherit the kingdom of God. I'd never want any child to be involved with that.
