purpose

do you think that your life has purpose????

are you actively working towards something? actively seeking for Gods purpose and direction in your life and seeking to go forward?

God has a plan and a purpose for us all, we just have to seek it and grow our faith as we head towards what God has for us.

i asked a friend on Sunday if his life has a purpose statement. when we do activities and run different things like ministries a purpose statement helps to focus what we do, and to really achieve something. it also provides a way to measure what we do and the impact that we make.

i'm not sure if it applies to us, that we need a purpose statement, but i do think that we need to think about what the meaning of our own person life is, and where we are heading.

God has given us a plan and a purpose... but are we living it??? i'm asking myself, am i living it?

  • I'm guessing a purpose statement is very similar to a businesses mission statement.

    I think this sort of an approach is really good. We can create one every year, every 2 years, whatever. In it outlines goals, objectives you want to accomplish until you make the next mission statement.

    This helps because whenever we are feeling down, or lost, we can re-visit our mission statement and look at our goals and stuff, and work out how to accomplish them.

    As for purpose, yes I know my life has a purpose, the full extent I am unsure, but I have a strong feeling that it lies somewhere in starting my own business.

    This is something I've always kind of really dreamed of, but have never really been game enough to act on it, always thinking of the bad things it could lead to, what people would think. Failure.

    Now, I've bitten the bullet so to speak, and am seriously looking into it, I even have a meeting with an accountant booked for next Saturday (Nov 11 @ 1pm).

    God has given us a plan and purpose, however I am sure there are those who have no idea what it is, not because they have no faith, or because they aren't seeking God, but simply because Gods perfect timing hasn't yet revealed their purpose to them.

    Anyway, there are my thoughts for the week :) :)

  • I don't have a purpose statement, and I definitely don't want one. But I know what it is I want to do with my life.

  • The Purpose-Driven-Coffe-Mug says that everyone should have a personal life mission statement (preferably one that encompasses the five key purposes ;) ), and I tend to agree.

    If you're not going anywhere, not doing anything, what really is the point in getting up in the morning? You may as well die and go to Heaven...

    Of course, it's more than just knowing what you're supposed to be doing, or even writing some pithy line about it to hold up as some kind of life-banner. I think you also need to be constantly evaluating your progress:

    * What have I done to reach this goal? How successful was it?
    * What have/can I do to improve?
    * What steps have I taken today?
    * What more should I do?
    * How is my character?
    * etc.

    In my opinion, this is true of your relationship with God too, not just your 'doing' for God.

  • can I suggest something about purpose/mission statements. I went to a workshop one day on corruption (no, not how to do it:P), and one of the things that came out of it was that such statements generally are a good container in which to put all the things a company should do. But that seems to be the extent of that company doing the right thing.

    The impression was, that mission statements are a cop out.

    Honestly, I'd agree with what came out of that workshop. Our purpose is really created by God's calling on our life, and a revelation of how that fits into God's plan. Its probably not something that can be totally captured on paper.

    One thing, however, that can (and should) be captured on paper is our vision - not as an waffly sentence, but everything that we 'see' in our hearts. Habukkuk 2 says to 'write the vision', and it says that others can then run with it. The passage actually alleudes to a the vision been accomplished quickly!

    But this can only happen when we have a revelation of our calling, and the vision that God gives to us. Its important that we pray for that revelation, and for each other that we would hear God's voice clearly and be 'filled with knowledge of His will' (Col 1:9)

  • Thanks Luke, i agree it's hard to capture everything you feel called to do and want to do in your life.

    but definately God's purpose must be held strongly in your heart
